Dec 2024 Net Worth Update

2024 is coming to a close and I’m back with a milestone update. I’ve just crossed the SGD 1m mark! This excludes CPF and my half-share of the HDB flat, at age 41. I don’t have benchmark statistics, but I’d reckon this is a pretty decent milestone. I feel blessed for having crossed this mark (I actually targeted 50s for this). I’ve been consistent with investing without really taking a hit on lifestyle, with some luxuries here and there with my wife. With cost of living on the rise/inflation, SGD 1m isn’t FU money at this point. However, our situation is less stressful without kids, car, condo and any fancy things. Me and my wife simply do not subscribe to those. We just spend on holidays and outings with friends (Japan in Jan and Spain in Feb 2025)!

The only thing is – my wife spends quite a bit on her bags, and recently I got her to really start investing seriously. My philosophy is that she earns her own money. So she is entitled to buy things that she enjoys. However, I do want to grow old with her comfortably without us worrying about money in retirement. Investment/retirement must therefore be a family effort. I made a Google Sheet for her recently, which is a simplified version of what I use. She basically just invests in the same counters that I do (minus the complicated stuff like SPY options wheel). She is comfortable with using the tracker and is able to do so on auto-pilot now! More information on our flavour of the Singapore Bogleheads portfolio.

XIRR Tracker

At the same time, I happened to get a Reddit message from a stranger yesterday on XIRR tracker. I’m sharing a stripped-down version which serves to track buy/sell/dividend trades and importantly the XIRR. This is the simplest way to tell how your investments are doing year-on-year. It’s called the Investment Tracker with XIRR and you can make a copy of it into your own Google Sheets.

On my portfolio itself, the mainstay remains the Bogleheads fund. I’ve earlier shared that it now contains an SPY options wheel which I’ve recently started to wheel an additional contract (2 contracts) per week. XIRR (for SPY wheel) is 14% for the past almost 2 years which I’m satisfied with. A35 is still negative and I’m in agreement with people that the negative correlation between equities and bonds are not as they used to be. Doesn’t stop me from adding on though. I’ll monitor and reevaluate in a year or two perhaps. Bogleheads fund XIRR is currently at 8.27%. Assuming no further fund injections, this gives a return of about $3,982.84/month.

Net Worth Breakdown

This excludes CPF and my half-share of HDB flat.

Stocks and bonds (Bogleheads fund with SPY wheel component): $581k
Crypto (BTC and ETH mostly): $416k
Surrender value of policies: $35k
Cash: $23k
Half-share of HDB mortage balance: -40k
Liquid net worth = SGD$1,015,000

Subsequent milestone is 1m in purely stocks and bonds. This happens in around 3.12 years with fund injections of around 6k/mth at 8.27% XIRR, according to calculations. I’ll talk about life philosophy in future which is a less technical topic.
